In 2012, I received a diagnosis of remitting-relapsing Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a turning point in my life. The unpredictability of the disease and the fear for an uncertain future submerged me into a psychological state of disbelief and denial. The anxiety and frustration of confronting this new life situation triggered the need to analyse and research about MS, not only at a clinical level, but also the socio-cultural means of dealing with a chronic and degenerative disease. This body of work represents an emotional exploration of the journey from an uncontrollable angst and mental dissent to the acceptance and understanding of living with MS.

 

The work is composed by 2 pieces. A Disappointed Woman video piece, which presents a visual allegory of remitting-relapsing type of MS. The Journal of a Disappointed Woman book narrates the journey of the personal acceptance by means of intimate thoughts and exploration.

En 2012, recibí un diagnóstico de esclerosis múltiple (EM) remitente-recurrente, un punto de inflexión en mi vida. La imprevisibilidad de la enfermedad y el miedo a un futuro incierto me sumergieron en un estado psicológico de incredulidad y negación. La ansiedad y la frustración al enfrentar esta nueva situación de vida desencadenaron la necesidad de analizar e investigar sobre la EM, no solo a nivel clínico, sino también en los medios socioculturales de lidiar con una enfermedad crónica y degenerativa. Este conjunto de trabajos representa una exploración emocional del viaje desde una angustia incontrolable y disensión mental hasta la aceptación y comprensión de vivir con EM.

 

El trabajo está compuesto por 2 piezas. "Una Mujer Decepcionada", un video que presenta una alegoría visual del tipo de EM remitente-recurrente y "El Diario de una Mujer Decepcionada", un libro que narra el viaje hacia la aceptación a través de pensamientos y la exploración personal.
